I FREAKING LOVE COFFEE!!
Whoa sorry, ok calm it down...
But I just want to get that out there right off the bat.
My favorite thing of all time is the smell of coffee grounds and a freshly brewed cup of joe in the morning.
It's integral to my morning routine.
I think the majority of the world would agree minus those who enjoy living an unfulfilled life.
I'm joking (sort of)
But seriously, I do have a point with this.
Caffeine should be thought of as a tool.
Yes caffeine is a drug, more specifically a stimulant.
Can you over do it?
Sure: sweaty palms, increased heart rate, upset stomach, etc.
But with the proper strategy it can be employed to help with energy levels, mental acuity and overall health.
The science supports this*
All you need is some basic strategy:
1. The average person shouldn't consume more than 2-3 cups of coffee in a day (this is a very general statement)
2. You want to consume most, if not, all caffeine in the AM hours. You may not think it, but taking down an espresso or coffee 5-6 hours before bed can still disrupt your sleep.
3. If you are consistently dealing with an afternoon crash then try delaying your caffeine intake until at least 30-60 minutes after you wake. I know this sounds counterintuitive, but disrupting your biological process with an outside stimulant as you are waking up can have negative effects on your energy later in the day.
Now, I know what you're thinking.
How am I supposed to wake up in the morning?!
Here are a few things you can do to get going without caffeine:
-Drink a big glass of water (you should be doing this regardless)
-Cold shower
-20-30 push-ups/air squats/sit-ups/etc
-Breath work
I know this is a lot, but if you are experiencing disruptions in energy, problems sleeping, or poor focus throughout the day, then it may be time to reassess your caffeine intake.
Cheers!
Sean
